When you press a letter on the keyboard the focus is shifted to the icon starting with that alphabet. Or when you select an icon with your mouse pointer the icon gets focused with a pale white box.
The rectangular translucent box that appears when you left-click and drag it around items is called the Selection box. It allows you to drag, and select multiple items on the desktop or any folder.
